Ampthill vs Cancer 2025 is just the beginning

When the group behind Ampthill vs Cancer first came together earlier this year, their goal was simple, to create something for the community that would unite people, support one another, and raise vital funds for charities that help those affected by cancer. Every member of the organising team has been personally impacted by cancer, either themselves or through a close family member, and that shared experience became the driving force behind the event’s creation.

“At the start, we were simply hopeful that people would turn up,” said organiser Dave Bateson. “To go into the event with all costs covered and be able to donate over £8,000 to each of the three charities was beyond our wildest dreams.”

The 2025 event saw nearly 1,000 runners and walkers take to Ampthill Park in June, raising more than £25,000 for Willen Hospice, Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) and the Primrose Car Service. The day became a symbol of the town’s strength and compassion, powered entirely by volunteers, local sponsors and residents.

Since then, the response from the community has been extraordinary. Messages of support continue to pour in, and fund-raising efforts have carried on well beyond race day.

“We’ve been blown away by the encouragement from people who want to see the event return,” added the committee. “Ampthill vs Cancer has become a platform that supports those living with cancer, surviving it, caring for loved ones, or grieving their loss. Every penny raised will continue to go directly to the people and charities who need it most.”

For 2026, the organisers are expanding their vision. In addition to supporting local cancer charities, a portion of the funds raised will be used to create a community fund, providing practical and emotional support to local people affected by cancer. Some funds will also contribute to a screening initiative aimed at helping prevent late diagnoses in the future. More details will follow soon.

The second Ampthill vs Cancer 5K will take place on Sunday 28 June 2026, the final Sunday of the month. Details of the 2026 charity partners will be revealed shortly, with a focus on spreading support across organisations and initiatives that help families throughout the region.

Transparency remains at the heart of the initiative. The team is committed to sharing updates on how funds are used and to ensuring the event continues to grow while staying true to its roots – by the community, for the community.
