A Community Unites to Make a Difference
28 May 2025
This summer, Ampthill is coming together for something truly special. On Sunday, 29th June, the town will host the first-ever Ampthill vs Cancer 5K, a community-driven event designed to raise vital funds for local cancer charities. But this isn’t just a race – it’s a movement, a chance to stand together, honour loved ones lost, and support those still fighting.
Cancer touches all of us. One in two people will be affected in their lifetime. It’s a sobering statistic, but behind those numbers are real people – friends, family, and neighbours. Every day, we pass one another, often unaware of the struggles many endure. But what if we could do something? What if, by simply taking part, we could make a difference for those who need it most?
That’s at the heart of Ampthill vs Cancer 5K. Whether you choose to run, jog, or walk, this event is about more than just fitness -it’s about solidarity. It’s about coming together to raise crucial funds and provide real, life-changing support to those battling cancer and their families.
The event will raise funds for three incredible charities that directly impact our community:
The Primrose Car Service
You may have heard of Bedford Hospital, but fewer people know about the Primrose Car Service, run by the Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends. This volunteer-driven initiative provides free transport for Ampthill-area cancer patients receiving radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. With 25 drivers making daily round trips, the service saves patients both time and money at an already challenging time. Yet, it relies solely on donations to meet its £30,000 annual cost.
Willen Hospice
The first hospice to benefit from the event, Willen Hospice, provides palliative and holistic care to those facing terminal illness. From pain management to emotional support, they ensure dignity and comfort for patients and their families. But with just 12% of their costs covered by the NHS, they depend on fundraising to continue their vital work.
Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT)
As the regional centre of excellence for cancer treatment, Addenbrooke’s Hospital is at the forefront of groundbreaking research and life-saving treatments. ACT helps fund cutting-edge technology, pioneering treatments, and a new Cancer Research Hospital set to revolutionise diagnosis and care.
Many of the event’s organisers have personal experiences with these charities—whether through a loved one’s battle or their own. Their mission? To give back to the services that were there when it mattered most.
A Race with a Story
You may be wondering—why the Golden Hare?
Over 40 years ago, Masquerade, a book that captivated the world, promised a hidden treasure—a golden hare—hidden right here in Ampthill Park. In tribute to that legendary treasure hunt, the Ampthill vs Cancer 5K will feature a special Golden Hare Mile for children, inspiring the next generation to get involved in this powerful cause.
Be Part of Something Bigger
The Ampthill vs Cancer 5K is more than a race—it’s about community, resilience, and hope. After the event, participants and supporters can enjoy live music and a community picnic in the stunning setting of Ampthill Park.
No matter your fitness level, you can take part. Whether you run in memory of a loved one, walk to show support, or simply cheer from the sidelines, every step counts.
Get Involved
To make this event a success, we need you. Entry is just £12.50 for the 5K and £5.50 for the Golden Hare Mile, with all proceeds going directly to our chosen charities.
We also rely on sponsorship, and thanks to the generosity of local businesses, we are receiving tremendous support. Dynamic Construction Services and Wheeler Electrical are our headline sponsors, and we’re thrilled to have them on board. Cook and Crossman are proudly sponsoring the “Hill of Hope” – the most challenging part of the 5K course. So many other local businesses across Ampthill are showing their support, demonstrating just how deeply this cause resonates with our community. This is truly a town united.
Sign up today and be part of Ampthill’s fight against cancer.
