Supporting the Primrose Car Service – A Lifeline on the Road to Recovery

28 May 2025

For those facing cancer, the battle isn’t just emotional and physical, it can also be logistical. Every year, hundreds of local patients begin radiotherapy treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, facing the prospect of 15, 25, or even 30 daily journeys to the outskirts of Cambridge. For many, this journey is almost impossible by public transport and places a heavy, exhausting demand on family and friends.

That’s where the extraordinary Primrose Car Service, part of the Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends, makes all the difference. This unique, volunteer-led service offers free, door-to-door transport for local patients receiving radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s – removing one of the most stressful obstacles in an already overwhelming time. There is no cost to the patient, and they are collected and returned safely to their own home, offering comfort and peace of mind when it’s needed most.

Each year, this vital service makes around 2,000 trips, every single one provided by compassionate volunteers. But to keep this service running, the cars used must be replaced every two to three years at a cost of over £60,000. Without this essential funding, the ability to provide this lifeline is at risk.

This year, Ampthill vs Cancer is proud to raise funds to help keep this remarkable service on the road – some of the committee themselves have been supported by this service. Together, we can support the volunteers who drive hope into the lives of patients every single day ensuring that no one misses life-saving treatment because they couldn’t find a way to get there.

This service is believed to be the only one of its kind in the UK, and it’s happening right here in our community.

Join us on Saturday 29th June at Ampthill Park. Sign up now and help drive hope forward.
